Create a software license configuration item (CI)

Applies to User roles:

Configuration Administrator

After you verify that there are existing software license models in Service Manager, you can create a software license configuration item (CI). If there are no software license models in Service Manager, you must add a software license model to the catalog.

A software license is an asset that represents the number of authorized software users within an organization. The software license CI also contains information, such as whether the software can be used on more than one operating system, the current software version, and whether the software resides on the network or on the client. After the software license CI is created, you can create one or more installation records to track where the software is installed and who is using it.

To create a software license CI, follow these steps:

  1. Click Configuration  Management  > Resources > Search  CIs.
  2. Click New. The Add New Device wizard opens.

  3. Select Software License in the CI type field, and then click Next. The New Configuration Item form opens.
  4. Enter the information about the software license to complete the CI record, and then click Save & Exit.

Note The part number you select determines the software license CI model that is used for the new CI.

Service Manager creates the CI record and assigns a unique identifier.
