How to create a device record

You can create a device record with the following methods:

Search for	Example	Results
A single word	`cat`	Topics that contain the word "cat". You will also find its grammatical variations, such as "cats".
A phrase. You can specify that the search results contain a specific phrase.	`"cat food"` (quotation marks)	Topics that contain the literal phrase "cat food" and all its grammatical variations. Without the quotation marks, the query is equivalent to specifying an OR operator, which finds topics with one of the individual words instead of the phrase.

Method 1: create a new device

From the main menu, select Build > Service Asset & Configuration.
From SACM Home, select Devices.
Click New.

In the New Device dialog box, provide all requested information. This dialog requests values for the basic device attributes.

Field	Description
Initialization options	The possible workflow phases for this device: In use is the default phase. The device is currently used. Awaiting delivery means the device is ordered but not physically available. In stock means the device is available.
Subtype	A level of categorization. For example, if the type is Computer functions as a server, the subtype is server.
Host name	A meaningful name that represents the address of a device connected to a network. For example, "vm123" is the network address.
Domain name	The fully qualified domain name where the device resides.
Serial number	The manufacturer's assigned serial number or unique ID for a product or element.
Inventoried model	The model discovered by an inventory tool.
Model	The definitive model to which the device belongs. For example, HP EliteBook Folio 9470m.
Asset tag	Physical assets have physical tags attached with a unique identifier.
Stockroom	The stockroom that stores the device. Only operationalA stockroom is operational when it is in the Operational phase of the workflow. stockrooms are available for selection. Available when:In stock is selected as the phase for the new device.
OS type	Standard operating system identifier. For example, Unix or Windows are OS types.
BIOS asset tag	Unique number (defined by the Distributed Management Task Force System Management BIOS specification) assigned to a device.
Owner	The person who manages or monitors the device.
Environment	Devices belong to a type of environment, such as Production or Test.
Virtual device	A checked box specifies a virtual device, such as a VM image.

Click Save. Service Management returns to the devices record list. You can see a new record that you created for the device. The next step is to edit that record to add more information.

Method 2: duplicate an existing device record

From the main menu, select Build > Service Asset & Configuration.
From SACM Home, select Devices.
Select the device record you want to duplicate.
Click the record identifier in the ID column to display the selected record.
Click Duplicate on the toolbar. The New device form is displayed.
Make any required edits to the new record, and click Save.

When you duplicate a device record, the values of all the fields of the existing record are copied to the matching fields in the new form. Exception: the following fields in the new form are not populated when you duplicate a device record.
