Run Time Service Model (RTSM)

Run Time Service Model. Formerly known as ODB (BSM9) and Internal CMDB (BAC8). Micro Focus Configuration Management System (CMS) consists of Central UCMDB, additional UCMDB instances (or RTSMs), and external data repositories for federation. You can integrate the BSM Run-time Service Model (RTSM) with a standalone Micro Focus CMS. The integration synchronizes CIs and relations between the central Micro Focus Universal CMDB and the RTSM in BSM, while retaining the original UCMDB global IDs.

CMS Integration Options

CMS is the central CMDB server and is the authority for configuration management in the multiple CMDBs solution. CMS is responsible for integrating between the different CMDB server instances and other services in the solution, as well as for generating global IDs. Most of the integrations are defined in CMS, and other CMDBs or services only access CMS to access the data from these CMDBs or services.

CMS allows integration with other services using:

  • Population
  • Federation
  • Data Push
  • Data Flow Management Web Services API
  • Soap Web Service

Population vs. Push

Population performs a scheduled retrieval of data from the external repository and creates a persistent copy of the data in the local CMDB. Data Push copies data from the local CMDB to an external repository, where the latter typically records a persistent copy of the data.

Population integration is preferred for topology synchronization rather than Data Push, because population integration allows each center to control the scope of the topology that is retrieved.

RTSM is designed to support BSM operational use cases only. For topology-based integrations between BSM and other Micro Focus UCMDB, it is recommended to install a central UCMDB instance, which will act as a Global ID generator and then choose the Push or Population strategy based on the internal needs.

Global ID Strategy. The global ID is a unique CI ID, generated by the central UCMDB, which identifies that CI across the entire portfolio, making it easier to work in multiple UCMDB environments. Once a global ID is available, it can be used as a shared context for point-to-point integrations between Micro Focus centers (for example, a new incident is opened in Micro Focus Service Manager when an event is received for a CI).

If your environment has centralized UCMDB, it is recommended to use UCMDB as the global ID generator in the solution design.
