Validate data sets

User roles: System Administrator, Configuration Administrator

Note In ITIL best practices, a Configuration Administrator manages master data. In Service Manager, however, only a System Administrator has rights to master data, because the master data is shared by all Service Manager applications. You may need to contact a System Administrator to implement master data changes or to request permission to perform this function.

If you receive a request from a trusted source to manually reconcile master data in the Configuration Management system (CMS), you must first validate the data sets before implementing the changes.

Master data is often provided by functions outside of Information Technology, such as Human Resource Management, Finance, and Facilities, and requests to change the data can come from different sources. For example, requests can be generated via Change Management as a Request for Change or via Request Management as the result of a new quote. Examples of master data are company records, which include contact information and preferences about the companies you work with or vendor records, which contain manufacturer and retail vendor/supplier information.

Note Service Manager can automatically update master data if your system is integrated with other applications, such as HPE Universal CMDB.

To validate data sets:

  1. Confirm that the format and content of the data sets adhere to your company's defined specifications.
  2. If the data sets meet the defined specifications, implement the changes to the master data records in Service Manager.
  3. If the data sets do not meet the defined specifications, contact the requestor for additional information.
