Types of Configuration Item groups

To search for Configuration Items (CIs), you can create a search query and the system returns a list of CIs that match your search criteria. You can use a list group to create a group of CIs. A wizard leads you through the process after you enter the applicable search criteria and the system generates a list of records for the search criteria.

You can save and edit this search to regenerate a list or group of CIs as one of the following types:

  • List group: A static snapshot of all the CI records that appears when you save a list generated by your selected search criteria. Configuration Management saves enough information to reconstruct the list with the same components each time that you view the list. The list does not add new CI records or remove obsolete CI records.
  • Query group: A dynamic list of CI records that appears when you save a query generated by your selected search criteria. Configuration Management saves the query to regenerate the list. Depending on the query parameters, the components can vary each time that you view the list. New CI records can appear; obsolete CI records can disappear from the generated list.
