Searching the Help
To search for information in the Help, type a word or phrase in the Search box. When you enter a group of words, OR is inferred. You can use Boolean operators to refine your search.
Results returned are case insensitive. However, results ranking takes case into account and assigns higher scores to case matches. Therefore, a search for "cats" followed by a search for "Cats" would return the same number of Help topics, but the order in which the topics are listed would be different.

Search for | Example | Results |
---|---|---|
A single word | cat
|
Topics that contain the word "cat". You will also find its grammatical variations, such as "cats". |
A phrase. You can specify that the search results contain a specific phrase. |
"cat food" (quotation marks) |
Topics that contain the literal phrase "cat food" and all its grammatical variations. Without the quotation marks, the query is equivalent to specifying an OR operator, which finds topics with one of the individual words instead of the phrase. |

Search for | Operator | Example |
---|---|---|
Two or more words in the same topic |
|
|
Either word in a topic |
|
|
Topics that do not contain a specific word or phrase |
|
|
Topics that contain one string and do not contain another | ^ (caret) |
cat ^ mouse
|
A combination of search types | ( ) parentheses |

Change a configuration item device type
Applies to User Roles:
System Administrator
Each asset in the Configuration Management database is assigned a configuration item (CI) device type.
The CI device type contains one record for each CI defined. When you define a new CI type,
the devtype
file adds a new record.
To change a Configuration Item device type, follow these steps:
-
Click Configuration Management > Resources > Search CIs.
- Use search or advanced search to find one or more records.
- Click a record to display it in the Configuration Item form.
- To change the device type for a single device, click More or the More Actions icon on the Configuration Item form.
-
Click Change Device Type. Configuration Management starts the wizard.
- Select a New Device Type from the list of records to choose a new device type and then click Next.
- Select a Subtype from the list of records if you want to choose a subtype for the device and then click Next. Configuration Management opens a Change Device Type Status of Attribute Files form to confirm current and new attribute file names.
Caution If any fields contain non-matching data in the old and the new attribute files, the data in those fields will be lost. Also be aware that any data in fields with matching field names, but with different data types, will become corrupt.
- To finish, click Next.
The updated asset record displays the new device type and optional subtype information.
Note To change the device type for a list of devices, click More or the More Actions icon for the record list and complete steps 5 to 8.
