Rename a configuration item

Applies to User Roles:

Configuration Manager

Configuration Administrator

Configuration Auditor

There are many cases in which you need to rename a configuration item (CI). As a best practice, you are recommended to run the Change Management process to modify CI names; alternatively, if Micro Focus Universal CMDB (UCMDB) is available, you can directly rename CIs in UCMDB.

Prior to version 9.41, renaming a CI in Service Manager did not trigger automatic updates to the related records, such as CI relationships or records that reference the CI as an affected service or CI.

Starting with version 9.41, when a CI is renamed, Service Manager automatically updates the CI information in all related records (incidents, interactions, changes, and so on) to maintain data integrity across modules.

The process of CI renaming depends on whether you are using the UCMDB integration or Service Manager for Configuration Management.

If you are using the UCMDB integration

If you are using the UCMDB integration for Configuration Management, use the following CI renaming process:

  1. The requestor submits a request to rename a CI (for example, a laptop).
  2. The Configuration Analyst creates a request for change in Service Manager for renaming the CI, and then go through the change management process.
  3. The Configuration Manager changes the CI name in UCMDB.
  4. The UCMDB integration pushes the renamed CI to Service Manager.

If you are using only Service Manager

If you are using only Service Manager for Configuration Management, use the following CI renaming process:

  1. The requestor submits a request to rename a CI (for example, a laptop).
  2. The Configuration Analyst creates a request for change in Service Manager for renaming the CI. The change request then goes through the Change Management process.
  3. The Configuration Manager changes the CI display name in Service Manager.

Caution Service Manager does not allow duplicate display names for CIs of the same CI type.
